What is culture?

Culture Definitions Culture: the beliefs, customs, art, laws and ways of living that a group of people share Culture Traits: the food, clothing, technology, beliefs, languages and tools that the people of a culture share Culture Region: an area of the world in which people share similar beliefs, history and language. We will identify and describe common traits that define the “American” culture and apply those concepts to define what culture means. I will be able to describe and define culture, culture traits and culture regions.

What Is Culture? Historians and sociologists will tell you that culture is made up of 1. Social Organizations – groups that you belong to and participate in 2. Customs and Traditions – things that your family does every year 3. Languages – what languages are spoken? 4. Arts and Literature – what do you like to read? Artwork? 5. Religion – what religious beliefs do you have? 6. Food and Clothing – traditional foods and styles of clothing? 7. Music and Dance – what types of music and dance do you like? We will identify and describe common traits that define the “American” culture and apply those concepts to define what culture means. I will be able to describe and define culture, culture traits and culture regions.
