Developing your Study Skills “It only takes you to do the change”

Pre-Test

Activity You have a huge test tomorrow, and you feel unprepared…what are some ways you could have prevented feeling unprepared?

Clear your schedule. Don't overwhelm yourself Outline Schedule important dates and Reschedule other events Organize materials for studying Prepare assignments/homework in a timely manner Turn in assignment in on time

Make sure you understand the task… Ask Questions Get help if you need it! Ask your teacher, classmate, or a friend Do not leave the classroom is you do not understand the assignment Make sure you comprehend the readings Go home and review what you have learned for the day

Break down the task into chunks… Estimate how much time? Don’t try to do it all at one time Break it down so that it’s “do-able” Create a “to do list” Stay up-to-date on assignments to help avoid overload AVOID PROCASTINATION

It doesn't have to be perfect… Some people are so afraid that they will not perform perfectly…they will not do anything at all… How to avoid this… Make sure you understand the expectations of your teachers Review what is expected Determine how important the task is and what level of performance is acceptable to you… Then… just do it!

Some of your classes may not be your favorite, try to make it as enjoyable as possible… Work on this task first! Study with a friend or work in groups Do the task on a time where you have the most energy Have an open mind! Reward yourself Make sure you check it off your list!

Study Environment… Commit to a time and place that meets your needs Does it match your learning style? Time of Day Groups Posture/Mobility Sound Lighting Temperature

AVOID Procrastination! How to avoid procrastination Budget your time wisely Concentrate Listen in class Memorize and drop down important dates Organized materials for studying Prepare assignment in advance Prepare for test in advance Take notes Have fun while studying!
