So, what main factor motivated Europeans to explore? Europeans wanted to find a water route to Africa and Asia.

The 3 G’s Gold Glory God

Explorers wanted gold but also anything that would make them money. Foreign spices were highly desired but could only be found in the Spice Islands.

Spice Islands

Glory Printing Press – allowed people to get famous for their exploits and findings. Kings wanted glory for their kingdoms. The bigger, the more glory they received.

God Europeans have always seen it as their duty to spread Christianity. Exploring and colonizing new lands allowed them to convert Natives.

But, wait. How did Europeans have the ability to explore far away? New technology!

Prince Henry the Navigator Portuguese Started a school for seafaring and exploring. Combined Islam ship technology with new innovations.

New Technology Caravel - new, faster, more maneuverable ship. Compass, Astrolabe, maps - technologies taken from Islamic culture.
