Aim: How can we compare early Indian Civilizations?

Do Now: Read article “Did Democracy Begin in the Indus Valley?”

Why might the Indus be a logical place for civilization to develop?

How do the dates for civilization compare with other places we have looked at?

Egypt – 3100 BCE King Menes -1100 BCE Mesopotamia – 3200 BCE Earliest cities 1000 BCE Cities develop along the Indus 2500 BCE-1500 BCE

How would you describe the cities along the Indus? Harappa & Mohenjo-Daro Perhaps largest early civilization (exception of Persian Empire) Well planned cities Streets laid out in grid patterns Each with a large temple/fortress Homes made of uniform clay bricks

Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro Also had modern plumbing- deliberate sewer systems

Why are archaeologists interested in the Indus Valley cities?

Why is this order important? How does it compare to Babylon? What does that say about contact with Mesopotamia?

How do archaeologists think society was organized in Indus Valley? Does that mean they were a true civilization?

Why does that civilization end? Natural Disaster or Aryan invaders?

Do we know anything about their religious beliefs? Polytheistic? Veneration of cattle
