Determining Gender from Bones Notes on page Determining Gender from Bones

Determining Gender using Skull Larger size in general in males Mandible is larger and wider in males than in females Nasal bridge is narrower in the female than in the male Skull is rounder in females; longer and more narrow in males Orbits of the eye are square shaped and deeper in males and rounder in females Zygomatic bone is more prominent

Determining Gender using Skull Brow line is more pronounced in males than in females Zygomatic bone is larger and more prominent in males Forehead is vertical in females and more sloped in males Mandible is more sloped in females, square in males Males have an occipital protuberance and females do not

Determining Gender using Pelvis Female Pelvis Male Pelvis The ileum are less sloped in males The obturator foramen are triangular shaped in females and circular shaped in males The pubic symphysis is shorter in females The pubic arch (distance between ischium) is wider in females than in males The iliac spines are spread further apart in females (pronounced hipbones) Sacrum is more curved in males (prominent in the pelvic cavity) The pelvic cavity is wider in females; round shape in females and heart shaped in males
