Historical Context of Realism The realist era lasted from 1865 to 1915 Started after Civil War ended. Advances in communication and transportation

What is Realism Realism replaced romanticism by trying to find meaning in everyday life instead of relying on the reader's imagination. Tried to portray the truth of a situation without sugar coating or romanticizing it. Realist writers were once viewed as rebels in the era of romanticized writing. Avoided exotic and supernatural topics in writing. Primarily fictional writing in the form of a novel.

Characteristics of Realism Common settings for writing were war, the American Frontier, and cities. Common characters for writing were workers, soldiers, politicians, and bosses. Focuses primarily on middle and lower classes. Involves tough ethical questions.

Famous Realist Writers Mark Twain: (1835 - 1910) Wrote Tom Sawyer and the Adventure of Huckleberry Finn. Stephen Crane: (1871- 1900) Wrote the civil war novel, The Red Badge of Courage.

Naturalism Naturalist writers view reality as the inescapable working out of natural forces. Writers examine people and society objectively to draw conclusions of what’s being observed. Naturalists tend to be pessimistic. Argued that individuals have no choice, that their life is dictated by heredity and external power.

Regionalism Regionalism uses regional dialect and location to capture the essence of life in various regions of the country. They wanted to help reunite the nation after the Civil War and learn more about one another. Cradling Wheat by Thomas Hart Benton

Realist Art Movement The Realist movement did not just apply to writing but also to art. Realist artists sought to portray events and people that were common in life.

Realism and Poetry The realist movement also influenced poetry that used similar literary styles. Find deep meaning in things without romanticizing them. We Wear the Mask We wear the mask that grins and lies, It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes- This debt we pay to human guile; With torn and bleeding hearts we smile, And mouth with myriad subtleties.
