Health and Heat “Dr. Owen, this heat will be the death of me” anon (May 2017) Heatwave is defined as a prolonged period of hot weather or when the daily maximum temperature of more than 5 consecutive days exceeds the maximum daily temperature by 5 C Public Health England have a day time threshold of 30C and 15C overnight Data from England and Wales from summers of 1993-2006 showed increase in all cause mortality of 2.1% for a 1C rise above the regional heat threshold

Health and Heat From 45yrs and above where extreme, persistent heat 80yrs and above are most vulnerable 34% cardiovascular causes, 25% respiratory, 41% all other causes (genitourinary, nervous system) Why?

Health and Heat What can we do? (World Health Organisation Guidance) Keep your home cool Keep out of the heat Keep the body cool and hydrated Help others If you have a health problem If you or others feel unwell Watch out for alerts via Met Office or Public Health England
