Levinson’s Developmental stages of adulthood Levinson’s developmental stages of male adulthood has 3 stages: Early aduthood (17-39) Middle Adulthood (40-59) Late Adulthood (60-75+)

Early Adulthood 4 Phases Early adult transition 17-22 Bridge between adolescence and adulthood. Entering the adult world 23-27 Explore relationships/careers Create occupational/accomplishment goals Age 30 transition 28-32 Look back at choice to this point Divorces are common in this period Period of re-evaluation. Settling down period 33-39 “making-it” period Form true commitments to family, jobs, friend and whatever is important to a person’s life.

Middle Adulthood Midlife Transition Entering Middle adulthood 40-44 Bridge between early and middle adulthood. Period of moderate to severe crisis. Entering Middle adulthood Age 50 Transition Often experience midlife crisis Culmination of middle adulthood

Late Adulthood Only 2 stages Both called Late Adult Transition. First from 60-64 then 65-death.

Adult Female Development 3 Phases: Leaving the Family Leave home Make psychological break from parents (become independent!) Develop life plan. (usually involves either career or marriage or both) Entering the Adult world Get married Get job Become a mother Traditionally choose between job or raising children. Entering the Adult world again Often women raise the children. Once children are old enough to be on their own adult females regularly return to work. Ironically Adult females begin developing commitment to their careers around the same time men begin to have doubts about theirs.

Assignment Write a 1 page essay on the differences and similarities between the average adult male and average adult female’s development.
