FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 14 August 2018

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Presenters: Moderator: John Donohue, Missouri Department of Transportation; Chair Wouter Brink, ARA Harold Von Quintus, ARA Presentation will be available for viewing on the ME-Design Resource website: http://me-design.com/MEDesign/Webinars.html

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Phones are being muted. Please post your questions in the Q&A box. This can be accessed by clicking on the Webex Q&A button. The presenters will answer all questions at the end of the webinar/demonstration as time permits. Questions not answered because of time, will be responded to separately. All questions and answers will be posted to the Pavement ME Design website

Process for Enhancing the Software: Suggested revisions are received from users and AASHTO members. Pavement ME Design Task Force monitors on-going/completed NCHRP, FHWA, and pool fund projects applicable to the MEPDG. Pavement ME Design Task Force members review and prioritize all potential suggested revisions and enhancements.

Pavement ME Task Force Members John Donahue, P.E.; Missouri DOT, Chairperson Vicki Schofield, AASHTO Project Manager Marta Juhasz, P.E.; Alberta Transportation, Vice-Chair Clark Morrison, P.E., North Carolina DOT Robert Shugart, P.E.; Alabama DOT Karen Strauss, P.E.; Oregon DOT David Holmgren, P.E.; Utah DOT Patrick Bierl, P.E.; Ohio DOT Felix Doucet; TAC Liaison Tom Yu, P.E.; FHWA Liaison Shane Marshall, P.E.; Utah DOT, SCOJD Liaison Travis Tackett, Florida DOT; T&AA Liaison

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Before we get started: Poll 1: Questions 1 and 2

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Reset Performance Predictions for Preventive Maintenance Treatments within Design Period. Temperature Dependent Indirect Tensile Strength; Input Level 1.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions Simplistic procedure to consider preventive maintenance treatments that change the transverse surface profile.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions Features: Allow users to consider pavement preventive maintenance activities within the design period. Reset selected performance parameters once during design period. Not a standalone maintenance design system Not intended for structural fixes.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions Treatment Assumptions: Non-structural techniques; changing surface profile and/or new surface layer < 1.0 inch. Changes the surface transverse profile; eliminates rutting and/or faulting. Initial IRI is dependent on type of treatment.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions Treatment Assumptions: Aging of the existing AC layers do not change. Full bond between treatment and existing AC wearing surface. Bottom-up fatigue damage continues to accumulate at the same rate without any preventive maintenance treatment.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions AC Surface Treatments Cold milling with other treatments Scratch layer with other treatments Micro-surfacing Ultra-thin overlays Hot in place recycling with seal coat Thin overlays Year treatment applied: Month applied is hardcoded to June 1. Initial IRI is an input & dependent on type of treatment. Rutting goes to “0”.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions IRI Rutting

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions PCC Surface Treatments Diamond grinding Ultra-thin AC overlays Year treatment applied: Month applied is hardcoded to June 1. Initial IRI is an input & dependent on type of treatment. Faulting goes to “0”.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Resetting Performance Predictions IRI Faulting

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Demonstration: Resetting Performance Parameters

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Poll 2: Questions 3-5

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Indirect Tensile Strength Indirect tensile strength and creep compliance are temperature dependent.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2 FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 – Indirect Tensile Strength Benefits: Allows user to input level 1 indirect tensile strength data that are temperature dependent. Has a minimal impact on the predicted length of transverse cracks caused by a low temperature event. Will have a more significant impact on transverse cracks caused by another mechanism (i.e. shrinkage which maybe an added enhancement in the future).

Input Level 1 Input Level 2 Input Level 3

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Demonstration: Temperature Dependent Indirect Tensile Strength; Input Level 1

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Poll 3: Questions 6 and 7

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Remember: Webinar #3, August 21 (Start Time - 10:00am CDT). Pavement ME Design Users Group Meeting scheduled for November 7 and 8, 2018 in Nashville, TN.

FY 2018 Enhancements Released with Version 2.5 Remember to visit https://www.allanswered.com/community/s/pavem ent-engineering/ to ask questions and participate in the Pavement ME design community.
