Why Should You Take LIB 1000: Research Strategies? By Kristin Davis

Content Throughout LIB 1000, you will do interactive assignments that will help you find resources that you can use in many of your other classes.  You will learn about the different kinds of plagiarism and consequences of them in 'the real world' and in your academic setting. You will learn about how and why to choose or decline use of specific sources for research and how to cite them properly. Students get a hands on approach of how these research methods take place.

Work Load This is a 1 credit hour course. This course lasts an 8 week period. Each week there is generally a reading assignment, a discussion board, a unit assignment, and a project builder which allows you to apply what you have learned. This course is centered through the use of Blackboard. There is an easy to read class calendar provided to the students to make keeping track of assignments easy.

Resources These are a few pages off of our IVCC library website that you will learn about and access during this course.  You will learn about the importance of them and about how much they can help you when you are looking for information.

Resources Continued... Above is another source that you will become familiar with, NoodleTools. This site will be used to help you cite your sources and check to make sure that you have done so correctly. You will learn about how you can organize projects, export your bibliography, or even email it from the site.

How Is This Course Taught? With this being an online course, students need to be able to navigate around Blackboard and find the information that they are looking for. The instructor, Professor Whaley, frequently posts announcements to keep the students current in the class. Learning to use the webpages, such as NoodleTools, is taught with either written direction or through a PowerPoint which shows a step by step on how to do what you are learning about.
