Evolution Ie- Change over Time

Founder Charles Darwin- 1859

Strongest will Survive “Adapt to your environment”

Darwin’s Evidence Galapagos Islands- geographically isolated islands off the coast of Ecuador

But the real evidence for Darwin was The Finches their Beaks were adapted to the food source on their specific island

Specific Vocabulary

Natural Selection-happens over time the strongest survive to reproduce (animals that are best suited to their environment will survive and reproduce)

Artificial Selection- Specific breeding done to create specific species In Plants and in Animals

Evidence for Evolution Darwin’s Reasoning Evidence for Evolution

Overproduction Animals like the sea turtle overproduce so that the strongest will survive to reproduce and carry on the species.

Variation Animals come in a variety of sizes and colors so that the ones with the best traits pass on those traits to their offspring

Adaptation any inherited trait that give a specific animal an advantage in its environment

Selection Natural or artificial

The evolution of a new species from an existing species Speciation The evolution of a new species from an existing species

Isolation Isolation in a remote area like an Island can cause a species to change to fit the environment and food source

What can lead to the changes

More Evidence

Organs found in the body that are no longer needed (ie. appendix) Vestigal Organs Organs found in the body that are no longer needed (ie. appendix)

Homologus Structures Same on different animals bone structure of hands

So then What?

Competition leads to species changing over time and ensuring the survival of the species through food webs and chains

Population Density- the amount of animals of a species in a particular area
