UNITARY FORM OF GOVERNMENT

INTRODUCTION According to Finer “A unitary government is the one in which all the authority and powers are lodged in the single centre, whose will and agent are legally omnipotent over the whole area.”

FEATURES OF UNITARY FORM OF GOVERNMENT Existence of single govt. Absence of provisional govt. with autonomy Constitution may be written or unwritten Flexible Government Single citizenship No need for independent judiciary Single legislature Absence of division of powers Only national police force

MERITS Strong Government less Expensive Efficient Administration Single Citizenship Administrative Uniformity Prompt Decisions More suitable for small countries More Flexible Follows a home and foreign policy more efficiently

DEMERITS Fear of Central government becoming Despotic Pressure of overwork on the Central Government Lack of Local Autonomy Government officials influence at the local or regional level Not very efficient of the big countries People lack political education in Unitary Government
