The foundation adopts a venture philanthropic model based on business principles and practices. We focus on 3 main areas of activity; Making Markets Work for the Poor in Sub Sahara Africa Facilitating Economic and Education Development Developing Young People in Scotland In Sub Sahara Africa, where we work together with Lord David Sainsbury’s Gatsby Foundation we are achieving systematic and sustainable change, improving the prospects and earnings of more than 45,000 smallholder tea farmers and developing large new tea planting projects in Tanzania and Rwanda. Feeds – TWF is now working on a number of large scale, long term projects to support economic development, education and research activities in Scotland with a particular focus on the NE – examples are; ONE – Opportunity North East – looking to extend oil and gas activity post North Sea Oil and broadening the economy by encouraging and investing in other sectors identified; Food, Drink and Agriculture, Life Sciences, Tourism. NHS Grampian – donation of £10.7M for creation of a multi-storey car park on the foresterhill site Within the Developing Young People in Scotland portfolio, which is clearly most relevant to today; the principal objectives are to improve tolerance, encourage citizenship values and enhance enterprise and employability in Scotland’s young people. We have 2 established programmes which we manage operationally within TWF

Developing Young People in Scotland WFT launched YPI in Scotland – September 2008 230 school schools participating in the 2017/18 academic year, covering all 32 Local Authorities, engaging in excess of 27,000 students. Since the programme was introduced in excess of £2 million has been donated to grassroots charities. 2016/17 across Highland - 25 secondary schools participating, engaging 2056 students, stewarding £75,000 to small local charities across the region. Recognised in a number of HMIE reports as a beacon of best practice within citizenship education. First piloted in 2011 To date 71 practitioners from 65 different schools covering 7 local authorities are engaged CLPL programme is accredited by GTCS in Global Education within Learning for Sustainability. This year is Highlands pilot year as a GLP partner with 3 Highland based teachers participating Our Youth and Philanthropy programme promotes active citizenship. Launched in September 2008 is has grown to such an extent that during the next academic year we will be involved with; 230 schools Covering all 32 local authorities Involving in excess of 27,000 students Since the programme launched in excess of £2 million has been donated to grassroots charities but perhaps more importantly, it helps students understand the positive impact they can have in supporting local issues, engaging them in philanthropy from an early age. Within Highland – 25 schools, engaging 2056 students, stewarding £75,000 to local charities (since 2012/13 when the first schools in Highland engaged in YPI a total of £228,000 has been awarded in YPI grants to Local charities within the region. The programme is well established and recognised as a beacon of best practise within citizenship education. Global Learning Partnerships aims to support the development of active global citizens through the provision of career-long professional learning opportunities for education practitioners in Scotland. Delivered over an 18 month period it provides 36 days of Career long professional learning (CLPL) including a 4 week placement in Rwanda or Uganda during the Scottish summer holidays. It provides teachers with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different education system and culture, providing a context for learning which will invoke a passion for promoting Global Citizenship within the classroom and wider school. The programme is accredited bt GTCS in Global Education within Learning for Sustainability. Our third and newest initiative is working with Scottish Education and Local Authority teams to encourage a higher quality of science teaching and education across Scottish primary schools which is of course what Gayle will now present.
