main street BACKHOME A large majority of the residents in the main street area are young, white, American, single professionals. Many of them are in their late 20s and early 30s. Income and housing values are much higher in the main street district than the average Dallas neighborhood. These people are young, affluent professionals who live in the area to be near places of work and also perhaps for the proximity to some of the night life offered in the downtown area and the nearby Deep Ellum area. Walking to work is the mode of transportation for 25% of the area residents- a considerably good statistic for American cities. The goal for this area would be to introduce diversity. This means making the area more family-friendly, more accessible to people with lower annual incomes, as well as introducing racial and cultural diversity.

farmers market BACKHOME The farmers market area is fairly sparse, with only 453 residents. Among those residents, however, there is some diversity. Racially, there is a good mix of white, black, and Hispanic residents. There is also a very skewed distribution of income. Almost 40% of the people in the are live below the poverty level, yet the median household income for 2008 was near $200,000. This shows that there are people from very different walks of life. This is a good thing, given that the Main Street district lacks diversity. The farmers market area has a very young population yet few households with children. The number of people walking to work in this area is also relatively high. Overall, this area has some diversity yet needs to be more family friendly and also needs to provide more for the residents of different economic backgrounds.
