There are many purposes of triage tags: To identify the wound category of the victim; To identify the victims that have been triaged or evaluated; To identify which victim needs to be evacuated first; To keep track of victims medical treatment. Remember that multiple responders will put their hands on this victim. It is imperative that any medical treatment or identified wound be marked on the triage card. This will inform future responders what has been do to this victim. There are many different types of cards. Meaning, they may all look different and attempt to acquire different types of information. Tags are generated on a regional bases, so as you go from one jurisdiction to another, the tags will have a different look. However, no matter what they look like, they all have one thing in common…the colors. The colors are universal across the country and all mean the same thing; Red is immediate Yellow is delayed Green is minor injury Black is dead or wound that are incompatible with life Gray is wound incompatible with life (they are dead, they just don’t know it yet) Tags will have a space to write interventions performed and dictate the location of known injuries. Tags are affixed to the victims wrist or ankle with a rubber band or string that is usually with the tag.
