Functional Area Assessment Process Farmingdale State College September 14, 2018

Assessment Cycle Plan Method of Assessment & Expected Results Identify Goals and Objectives Plan Method of Assessment & Expected Results Implement Plan Evaluate results Use Results to Improve *Closing the Loop after making improvements * May or may not have the closing the loop step each year

Setting Goals Goals: are the desired end result for your service or program align with the College’s goals lack specifics You should have 3 to 5 goals; all assessed within a 5 year period. Example: Students will be prepared with the skills they need to apply for a job.

Objectives Goals and objectives are similar (not same) and complement each other Goals are broad direction-setting statements, objectives are more specific Objectives are measureable Example: Goal: Students will be prepared with the skills they need to apply for a job. Objective1: Offer a resume writing workshop to all graduating seniors in the fall semester. Objective2: Offer mock job interview sessions for graduating seniors in the spring semester

Method of Assessment After we have decided what we want to do (goals & objectives), how are we going to demonstrate that we did it? Examples of Methods of Assessment: Record the # of students using a service Conduct a satisfaction survey Calculate the turn-around time for a process

Expected Results Expected Results are the criteria by which you will judge if you met your objective, and thereby, your goal. Avoid vague targets Include a timetable Set a target that is meaningful Goal: Students will be prepared with the skills they need to apply for a job. Objective1: Offer a resume writing workshop to all graduating seniors in the fall semester Method of assessment – record attendance at workshop Expected result – 95% of seniors will attend the workshop in the fall semester Method of assessment – Review resumes written at workshop Expected result – 100% of the resumes will be in the correct format Objective2: Offer mock job interview sessions for graduating seniors in the spring semester Method of assessment – record attendance at mock interview sessions Expected result – 95% of seniors will attend a mock interview session in the spring semester Method of assessment – evaluate student performance in the mock interviews using a rubric Expected result – 100% of participating seniors will be rated at least a 3 on the rubric interview scale.

Closing The Loop Were results as expected? To what extent have our results been achieved? Plan action aimed at improvement Repeat assessment
