“…transparency is needed to "heal the wounds" of Peru’s mining sector President Ollanta Humala of Peru, at the EITI regional conference in June 2012

“In Mongolia, EITI contributes to strengthening legislation in the mining sector and establishing good institutions for managing the wealth from our natural resources” President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj of Mongolia, Oslo, 8 October 2012

“Today, I can announce that the United States will join the global initiative [EITI] in which these [extractive] industries, governments and civil society, all work together for greater transparency so that taxpayers receive every dollar they’re due from the extraction of natural resources.” President Barack Obama, at the launch of the Open Government Partnership, New York, United States, 20 September 2011.

“That we be able to utilize our natural resources to uplift the living conditions of the Filipinos not just of today, also of the following generations. In 2010, 145 billion pesos was the total value derived from mining, but only 9 percent went to the national treasury. These natural resources are yours; it shouldn’t happen that all that’s left to you is a tip after they’re extracted” President Benigno Aquino, recalling the purpose of Executive Order 79 on mining in his State of the Nation address, 23 July 2012.

“In the extractives sector, where investments are hefty and require a long time to generate returns, political instability and social tensions are the real enemy. The technical piece is easy. Political and social instability are the real enemy to extraction companies. Transparency at national, local and community levels shows what is to be done, where and at what cost.” Phil Hemmens, Senior Vice President, Exploration and Production, ENI
