The Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny

Nationalism Victory in War of 1812, new inventions, expansion and the rise of cities gave way to increased feelings of Nationalism What is nationalism? Loyalty and devotion to a nation Era of Good Feelings: nationalism and pride under President James Monroe

Manifest Destiny Idea that God gave the North American continent to the Americans and wanted them to expand their boundaries West to the Pacific Ocean Where did Americans expand and settle? Oregon California

Manifest Destiny cont. Americans also expanded south into Spanish held Florida 1818: General Andrew Jackson led troops into Florida Destroyed Indian villages, seized Spanish settlements and removed the Spanish governor from power 1819: U.S. and Spanish signed the Adams-Onis Treaty Spain gave all of FL to the U.S. and transferred ownership of Oregon territory

Adams-Onis Treaty, 1819

Intervention in Latin America 1809: Spanish colonies in Latin American began to declare independence Great Britain, Austria, Prussia and Russia formed the Quadruple Alliance An attempt to suppress movements for independence from monarchies in Europe Alliance, without support of Great Britain, also promised to help Spain regain its territories in Latin America Great Britain and the U.S. were not pleased

The Monroe Doctrine Great Britain and U.S. enjoyed trade with independent Latin nations – were resistant to Spain regaining control Britain wanted to create a joint proclamation that supported Latin American independence Instead, U.S. chose to work alone = the Monroe Doctrine Declared that American continents were “henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers”

Importance of the Monroe Doctrine A bold act that marked the beginning of a long period of American policy preventing other great powers from interfering in Latin American political affairs Established the direction of U.S. foreign policy in North America for decades Established America as a “police power” Police Power: a government’s power to control people and property in the interest of public welfare, order and security Is the United States still a police power?
