The Men of South Georgia, by Ron Hilvers, MD, took 5th Place in the 2003 WEM Photo Contest. These comical fellows represent the millions of penguins that make South Georgia Island their home. South Georgia is located southeast of the Falklands in the Southern Ocean, 1000 miles north of the Antarctic. It is a vital breeding ground for some of the greatest concentrations of wildlife on the planet. Photograph © Ron Hilvers, MD, Boise, Idaho. Cristal Peak, Dolomite Mountain Range, Italy, by Matthew Schaeffer, MD, tied for 6th Place in the 2003 WEM Photo Contest. These ramparts of white and pink limestone thrusting up to 10,000 feet from rolling green meadows are as dramatic as they are beautiful. 3000-foot walls attract rock climbers, while energetic hikers tread a network of foot trails serviced by a system of rifugios—overnight huts that are more like small hotels, with food, wine, heat, electric lights, and bunks.
