Canadian Landforms and Ecosystems How Nature is part of the Canadian Identity

We can look at nature and environment in Canada in many ways… one such way is through maps… Landform and Ecosystem maps.

This is a Landform map. This is a Landform Map

Now what is a landform? A landform is features in nature such as mountains, plains, valleys, etc.

So what types of landforms are there in Canada?

Ecosystems Now across Canada there are many ecosystems…

What is an ecosystem?

What is an ecosystem? Trees, vegetation, plants… Animals, water life, … Weather and climate…

Compare Landforms to Ecosystems

Landforms dictate types of Ecosystems. Consider what type of ecosystem is in the western Cordilla.

Or consider the ecosystem in the Canadian Shield.

The ecosystems in the Arctic Lowlands….

Or the Ecosystems in the Prairies or the St Lawrence lowlands

And Finally the ecosystems of the Inniutian or the Appalachian mountain ranges?

Nature is of great importance in the Canadian Identity. The vastness of our country and its’ resources makes nature important to our economic and social well being. We show this connection in many other ways as well

First Nations of Canada regarded themselves as part of nature and saw an interconnectedness to all life. The European powers saw a country rich in natural resources and potential. This has influenced our identity and national symbols to this day.

Assignment Using the observations you have made regarding the different Landforms and ecosystems of Canada study the paintings before you and make at least three observations about the Ecosystem represented and where this might be. Finally give your impression of the painting and how it reflects the area of Canada.
