Midterm Review 11 January What kind of learner are you? Visual, kinesthetic, auditory? To learn, you must be actively engaged with your topic and be proactive when it comes to studying. Learning is not a passive activity. To effectively study, you must be able to concentrate on a topic for about 20 – 30 minutes, without distractions.

A proposed study outline The Nature of Science A. Theories, hypotheses, & pseudoscience B. Independent & Dependent variables C. Graphing 1. line & bar graphs 2. labeling and axis Macromolecules – write a statement about where they occur, what makes them similar, different, and what their physical prosperities are A. Carbohydrates B. Proteins C. Lipids D. Nucleic acids

Midterm Review 12 January What phase of the cell cycle is this? Based on this image, what concept related to the cell theory is being shown? A scientist conducts an experiment to test the hypothesis that a vitamin could extend a person’s life-expectancy. What are the Independent and Dependent variables?

Carmen conducted an experiment to determine if listening to different types of music would affect a person’s pulse. Her hypothesis was that pulse rate would change with different types of music. Each person listened to seven different selections of music for 30 seconds each. Each person’s pulse was taken before the music and then after each 30-second interval of music. The pulses were taken again after the music selections were completed. Based on her experiment, Carmen concluded that a person’s pulse rate changed when the person listened to different types of music.   Which component is missing from Carmen’s experiment? A. a question B. a hypothesis C. a control group D. a description of the experiment

A research group has discovered that damselflies, a type of dragonfly, are being infected by a particular type of aquatic protozoan. Both young and adult damselflies are not directly infected by the protozoan but contract the infection from the prey they eat. The graph shows the percentage of adult damselflies infected by protozoans during the summer and early fall.

Midterm Review 11 January Design an experiment: Develop an experiment were seeds are germinated in different soils. The experimental design must contain an independent & dependent variable, and a control. The experimental design will also need to describe the volume of water given and how often, what temperature the seeds are kept are at, and how much light the seeds receive.

Independent variable – organic content of the soil (type of soil) Dependent variable - how many seeds germinated Control – ?
