Presentation transcript:

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Lesson Three: Rich Young Man

Mark 10:17-31 Mark 10:17-23, “ As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good?* No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’” He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through [the] eye of [a] needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.” Peter began to say to him, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel30who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. But many that are first will be last, and [the] last will be first.”

Questions: Did the rich young man keep the commandments? Did he know about God? Did he use his things well? Did he love them more than God? Why was the rich young man sad? Do we work hard for the things we have? Do we deserve them? Are our possessions a gift from God? Is it hard to give up our possessions? Why? What if you had to give up television, video games, the internet, or MP3 players? Or fidget spinners? Did the rich young man love God? How much? What is a detached love? How can we have a detached love for our possessions?

Detached Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVJyf5yKxuo A detached love is not less than a full love of a thing, but it is a love that is not selfish, it is one that is ready to let go of things when God asks it of us.

St. John of the Cross Spanish mystic and Catholic Saint (1542-1591) Said that a bird, whether it is tied by a heavy gold chain or the lightest, tiniest thread, will not be able to fly free. So it is with the soul and riches. If we are unduly attached to worldly treasure, we won’t be able to love God as we should.

St. Francis of Assisi Founder of the Franciscan Order (1181/82-1226) Popular youth of Assisi, born to wealth and wordly privilege Captured in battle, re-thought his life and gave away his wealth Founded Order of Friars Minor, dedicated to following Christ by living in poverty and preaching about the love of God
