Worship: Is all of life worship? April 20, 2014 River Bend

Introduction Various viewpoints - Donald Miller - “I Don’t Worship God by Singing. I Connect with Him elsewhere.” Mike Root - Spilt Grape Juice The logical outcome of these viewpoints Purpose of our study

Where do we begin the conversation? Building the foundation - Romans 12:1 - “1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” (reasonable service, NKJV; true and proper worship, NIV; spiritual worship, ESV)

Where do we begin the conversation? Building the foundation - Colossians 3:17 - “17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 - “31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Where do we begin the conversation? Worship can have a beginning point - Genesis 22:5 - “…and we will worship…” 1 Samuel 1:3 - “…to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts…” Matthew 2:11 - “…and worshiped Him…” Luke 24:52 - “…after worshipping Him…”

Where do we begin the conversation? Worship can have a ending point - 1 Samuel 1:19a - “Then they arose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned again to their house in Ramah…” Luke 24:52 - “…after worshiping Him…” Acts 8:27 - “…and he had come to Jerusalem to worship,”

Where do we begin the conversation? Worship can involve a “when” and a “where” - 1 Samuel 1:3 - “…in Shiloh…” 2 Samuel 12:20 - “…and he came into the house of the Lord and worshiped…” Acts 24:11 - “…I went up to Jerusalem to worship.”

Where do we begin the conversation? Is it sensible that every thing that I do is worship? household chores - mowing the lawn - spanking a disobedient child - sleeping - eating - etc. Same word but different meanings - “Evolution means change over time, therefore evolution (macro) must be true.”

Where do we begin the conversation? Same word but different meanings - Elder (presbuteros) Older man (Acts 2:17; 1 Timothy 5:1) Member of Sanhedrin (Matthew 16:21; 26:41) Bishop/Pastor (Acts 20:17, 28; Titus 1:5, 7)

Where do we begin the conversation? Same word but different meanings - Deacon (diakonos) Domestic servant - (John 2:5, 9) Christians (John 12:26) Preachers (1 Corinthians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 3:2) Deacons (Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8, 12)

What is being pushed? Informality - Mike Root - Spilt Grape Juice Does this fit New Testament worship? John 4:23-24 - Worship does not seem to be something thrown together last minute. Is God the object of our worship? Hebrews 13:15-16; Ephesians 5:19-20; Colossians 3:16

What is being pushed? Togetherness - Mike Root - Spilt Grape Juice What is the purpose of assembling together? Hebrews 10:24-25 - “24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”

What is being pushed? New thoughts on worship - Worship focused upon ME! - Psalm 5:7; 29:2; Revelation 4:9-11; 15:3- 4 Applause in the assembly - Mike Root - Spilt Grape Juice Three questions about clapping - Hebrews 13:15; Matthew 21:23- 27

What is being pushed? New thoughts on worship - Eating together - 1 Corinthians 11:22, 34 Expanded role for women - First century problems - 1 Corinthians 14:34-35; 1 Timothy 2:11-12 Where does Paul’s arguments originate?

Conclusion What are some practical lessons we can learn from their arguments? There is more to Christianity than “going to church.” God desires more than simple rote ritual from His worshippers. - Matthew 15:8-9 Their emphasis on a life consecrated to God - Romans 12:1-2
