What is the Building Envelope? A building envelope detail show: Structure Insulation Air Barrier Vapour Barrier Back Ventilation (rainscreen) Finishes (interior and exterior) Scale Lineweight, Linetype, Separating Elements Laying out masonry & masonry sizes Module 9 ARCH 28544 – Architectural Studio 2

Rainscreen = a system, not a thing it manages moisture Building Envelope – The Rainscreen Principle Rainscreen = a system, not a thing it manages moisture Every well-designed rainscreen wall needs: A water-resistive barrier (WRB); An air gap between the WRB and the back of the siding; Flashings at all penetrations and vulnerable areas; and (usually) Weep holes at the bottom of the wall. Ventilation openings at the top of the wall are optional. Module 9 ARCH 28544 – Architectural Studio 2
