WP4 Objectives Science Demonstrators Objective: To develop a number of Science Demonstrators in particular domains that will show the relevance and usefulness of the EOSC Services and their enabling of data reuse, and will drive the further development of the EOSC. WP4 Objectives Of special interest are societal challenges i.e. from Life Sciences, Energy, Climate, Materials, involving the access and re-use of data and knowledge Focus on challenges already being addressed by members of: EIROforum, EU Flagship Projects, EU Centres of Excellence, Citizen Science, Long-tail of science, Evolving multi-national science initiatives These Science Demonstrators will be used - to drive and prioritise the integration of the EOSC services - to meet the functional and non-functional needs of researchers - to ensure that the proposed technical governance structures provide the control needed by researchers. WP4 Task 1 & Task 2 Task 4.1: Selection, coordination and evaluation of the Science Demonstrators [Lead: MPG] This task will manage the selection and coordination (with Task 3) of the Science Demonstrators Task 4.2: Technical Requirements from the Science Demonstrators [Lead: EMBL] The selected Science Demonstrators will each be allocated 12 PMs of effort to engage with the EOSC Project during the 12 months duration of each Science Demonstrator. Each Science Demonstrator will: Work with their assigned shepherd to engage with the EOSC in establishing their technical use cases, and the software tools, data models, and scientific workflows that they use. Commit to adopting and using the EOSC services as they become available to meet their technical requirements and providing feedback on the use and suitability of these services. WP4 Task 3 Task 4.3: Shepherding the Science Demonstrator [Lead MPG] Each Science Demonstrator will be assigned to a ‘shepherd’ who will provide the link between the Science Demonstrator and the technical experts both within this WP and other technical activities within the project. The shepherd will attend relevant meetings relating to their assigned Science Demonstrator, track its progress and escalate issues with the EOSC Pilot as required. The shepherd will work with each new Science Demonstrator and the relevant technical experts within the project to: Identify and capture the key ‘technical use cases’ within each Science Demonstrator by capturing the functional and non-functional commonalities and requirements within the software tools, data models, and scientific workflows that each Science Demonstrator uses. Maintain the technical use cases as living documents that are reviewed, revised and consolidated as additional Science Demonstrators are included in the EOSC Pilot. Work carried out in Task 4.1 First five Science Demonstrators: pre-selected through a call prior to the start of EOSCpilot. For the selection of 10 more Science Demonstrators: Procedure developed at project start for carrying out Open Calls, described in deliverable D 4.2 in March 2017. Two Open Calls carried out according to this procedure : First Open Call in April 2017 – resulted in 30 proposals Second Open Call in Aug/Sep 2017 – resulted in 26 proposals All proposals were subject to technical and scientific review processes with scientific reviewers from the Scientific Advisory Board and technical reviewers from a pool of experts. Work carried out in Task 4.2 Selected Science Demonstrators receive central funding of 12 PMs for their 12 months long engagement with EOSCpilot and their various tasks and missions to help improving the service portfolio and processes essential for the EOSC thus contributing to the advancement of Open Science in Europe (exception CERN: participated without funding with contributions in kind). Details of the engagement model of Science Demonstrators have been developed in the Deliverable D4.1 due April 1 2017. The engagement model described in D4.1 has been applied to the accepted Science Demonstrators.
