Math Module 1 Ratios and Unit Rates Topic A: Representing and Reasoning about Ratios Lesson 5: Solving Problems by Finding Equivalent Ratios 6.RP.1 6.RP.3a PowerPoint designed by Beth Wagenaar Material on which this PowerPoint is based is the Intellectual Property of Engage NY and can be found free of charge at www.engageny.org

Lesson 5 Target I can use tape diagrams to find an equivalent ratio when given the part-to-part ratio and total of those two quantities. I can make the connection between the constant, c, in the definition of equivalent ratios and the value of the unit in the tape diagram used to solve ratio problems.

Classwork Example 1: 10 minutes Lesson 5

Classwork Example 1: 10 minutes Lesson 5

Classwork Example 1: 10 minutes Lesson 5 12

Classwork Example 1: 10 minutes Lesson 5 192 vehicles

Classwork Example 1: 10 minutes Lesson 5

Classwork Example 2: 10 minutes Lesson 5

14 x 12 = 168 non-commercial vehicles. Classwork Example 2: 10 minutes Lesson 5 Since every section of the tape diagram represents 12 vehicles, you multiply the number of sections times 12. 14 x 12 = 168 non-commercial vehicles. 5 x 12 = 60 commercial vehicles.
