British control lasted almost exactly 60 years The British originally went to Nigeria as missionaries to spread Christianity They largely distorted and disparted Nigerian culture And exploited natural resources
Early Years Niger Coast Protectorate was expanded to form Southern Nigeria Government seat for Southern Nigeria was held at Lagos Northern rulers refused to accept British rule In Northern Nigeria Fredrick Lugard is made Commander-in-Chief and high commissioner of the protectorate
Late 1800's Britain fully colonized Nigeria 1903-1906: Lugard put an end to their ruler's slave-raiding expeditions Lugard allows indirect rule 1912: Lugard is made governor of Southern and Northern Nigeria He's given the task of merging the regions and does so by 1914
World War 1 brought combined British and French invasion of German Cameroon- completed in 1916 League of Nations-1922- mandated 2 nations to form the former German colony The British mandate included 2 strips of Eastern Nigerian borders After World War 1 Nigeria's rival claims of various regions became evident
1951: North, South, and Eastern regions had been divided (They had their own house of assembly) There was 1 council for all of Nigeria 1954: New constitution established Federation of Nigeria and added Federal Territory of Lagos African political structure is slowly obtained in late 1950's Thanks to Federal Prime Minister in 1957
That same year West and East regions are given internal self-government Northern region was given internal self-government in1959 October 1960 full independence was given
