The Values That Unite Us Chapter One Section Three

Equal Respect: The American Dream Americans are held together by shared beliefs and values. What are beliefs? What are values? Many immigrants have come to our nation because of our beliefs and values. What is the basic American belief? What is the role of beliefs and values in American society?

Basic American Values In our nation everyone has the opportunity to contribute their talents and ideas to our society. In other words, every person has the right to be treated with equal respect. What are the three basic values that support our American belief?

Basic American Values Equality Equal respect is based on the belief that everyone can contribute to society. In order to contribute everyone must have the same _______ and________ in life. What is Equality?

Basic American Values Equal Opportunity Our opportunities in life may be limited by our abilities. Our opportunities may also be limited by our energy and interests. However, our race, sex, religion, background, and opinions should not be used to deny us equal chance to succeed in life.

Basic American Values Freedom What is freedom? If you believe in equal respect, you give the same freedoms to others that you expect for yourself. However, you must not be so free in your actions that you end up interfering or limiting someone else’s freedom. What is the example the text provides? Can you think of any other examples?

Basic American Values Justice Equal respect also means that everyone deserves to be treated fairly. What is justice? However, justice does not require that everyone always be treated the same. i.e. Job experience the more experience the higher your pay will be.

Citizens and the American Ideal An Imperfect Society Unfortunately, we do not always achieve our ideals. What is the example the text provides of how our society can be imperfect? The American Ideal and the Future What is our Fundamental Belief? Sadly, we are not always welcoming to new comers or to people who look different from us.

Citizens and the American Ideal The American Ideal and the Future We sometimes even distrust new comers or people who look differently. This is proof that our society still has work to do in order to ensure that the rights of all Americans to equality, freedom, and justice are protected.
