Grammar Lesson & Practice 24: Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

Grammar 24 Review Silently complete the review by yourself. We will go over it when everyone is finished.

Maniac Magee: Chapter 41 Read this excerpt from chapter 41. It expresses Maniac’s thoughts about segregation. On a separate sheet of paper, write your reaction to Maniac’s thoughts. When answering this prompt, think about whether or not you agree with Maniac and why. Which, of course, is just what Maniac had had in mind. Remembering how little Grayson had known about black people and black homes. Thinking of the McNabs’ wrong-headed notions. Thinking of Mars Bar’s knee-jerk reaction to anyone wearing a white skin. And thinking: “Naturally. What else would you expect? Whites never go inside blacks’ homes. Much less inside their thoughts and feelings. And blacks are just as ignorant of whites. What white kid could hate blacks after spending five minutes in the Beales’ house? And what black kid could hate whites after answering Mrs. Pickwell’s dinner whistle?” But the East Enders stayed in the East and the West Enders stayed in the West, and the less they knew about each other, the more they invented.

Maniac Magee: Chapter 42 Read this excerpt from chapter 42. Then write and explain it in your own words on the same sheet of paper. It was a good question. What had he thought? What had he expected? A miracle? Well, come to think o fit, maybe one had happened. While he was looking for one miracle, maybe another had snuck up on him. It happened as he was clamping and lugging Mars Bar down the gauntlet of Cobras, trying to keep him alive – and what was Mars Bar doing? Fighting him, Maniac, straining to get loose and bust some Cobras. Out-numbered, out-weighed, but not out-hearted. That’s when Maniac felt it – pride, for this East End warrior whom Maniac could feel trembling in his arms, scared as any normal kid would be, but not showing it to them. Yeah, you’re bad all right, Mars Bar. You’re more than bad. You’re good.

Maniac Magee: Chapter 43 Answer the following on the same sheet of paper as your other two answers. Maniac slept in a variety of places throughout this novel. Where would you choose to sleep if you were homeless? Why?

Homework Make sure to keep up with chapter titles and summaries! READ YOUR AR BOOKS!!!!! Finish what you didn’t finish in class.
