Photonics Implementation Progress on Photonics Implementation Kurt Woschnagg, UCB Mons, October 2003 For the photonics implementation group: Ice description Table production AMASIM Parametrization Kurt W. (Berkeley) Paolo D. (Madison) Igor L. (London) Stephan H. (Stockholm) Peter N. (Brussels) ! !!! ? Ped M. (Hawaii) ? Consulting

Optical properties in AMANDA ice From in-situ light sources in AMANDA we get (after some analysis): If you ask “what is the absorption/scattering length?” don’t expect a simple answer!

Light propagation codes: two approaches PTD Photons propagated through ice with homogeneous prop. Uses average scattering No intrinsic layering: each OM sees homogeneous ice, different OMs may see different ice Fewer tables Faster Approximations Photonics Photons propagated through ice with varying properties All wavelength dependencies included Layering of ice itself: each OM sees real ice layers More tables Slower Detailed

PTD vs. photonics: layering Bulk PTD Layered PTD photonics 2 3 2 1 2 3 2 1 2 3 2 average ice type 1 type 2 type 3 “real” ice

Photonics Implementation Action Items 1. Create photon tables (Paolo D.*, Igor L.) Tables for full “millennium” ice done Test tables (bulk, no scattering) done 2. Modify AMASIM (Stephan H.*) New interface (new geometry, integral muons) ~done 3. Parametrize tables (Peter N.*, Daan H.) Why: Tables are many and huge, not practical NN fits to tables in progress 4. Upgrade reconstruction (Christopher W.?) Why: Current Pandel functions fitted to old bulk ice Pandel fit to new tables, table reconstruction,… to do * talk to follow
