“My Constellation” ~A Writing Exercise~ Astronomy, Fall 2014 Due Tuesday 11/18/14
“My Constellation” “The Zodiac” is a continuous band of constellations that appear in the northern hemisphere’s night sky within the ecliptic (the apparent path the sun appears to take through the sky as a result of the Earth's revolution around it).
The Zodiac Constellations were named by the Greeks and Romans after figures in their mythologies. • Each month has its own signature constellation, marked by the Sun’s annual entrance into that constellation’s part of the ecliptic.
“My Constellation” Writing Project - Use the internet or library resources to: 1. Find out which of the Zodiac constellations is dominant on your birthday. 2. Find out the story or mythology behind your constellation’s name and perhaps its origins.
Write one or two paragraphs about “your constellation.” 4. (A picture of the constellation would be nice!) 5. Read pp 63-67 (Through Star Lore) first!
Warnings… Please do not write about your “Sun Sign,” or horoscope personality. That is astrology, not astronomy, and astrology is not a science. Please type if your handwriting is atrocious. (You know who you are… no hiding.)
You will be scored on your writing ability as well as your information, so use good grammar, sentence structure and paragraph structure. Spelling counts. Creativity counts, too. Make it pretty!
