Presentation transcript:

Properties of light

Learning goals We are learning the different properties of light. We are learning about the electromagnetic spectrum.

What is Light? Light: A stream of photons each travelling with wave-like properties at the speed of light. A photon is the smallest quantity of energy which can be transported.

Properties of Light Rectilinear Propagation: Travels in straight lines in the same medium. Light does not need a medium (substance) to travel Unlike sound, water waves In vacuum or air, speed of light is constant c = 3.0 x 108 m/s Visible light is a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

Visible Light Spectrum White light is made up of: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Or remember… ROY G BIV

Prism Demonstration A triangular prism slows down the speed of light Each colour is slowed differently because of differing energy levels - this separates white light into different colours!

Learning goals We are learning the different properties of light. We are learning about the electromagnetic spectrum.
