Experimental Design

Words to Know… Hypothesis: drives the experiment and gives it direction Hypothesis: proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation

…It Varies… Fertilizer Independent Variable (IV): It is The variable that you are changing therefore manipulating Fertilizer

…It Varies Height Dependent Variable (DV): It is the variable that you are measuring, that responds to IV Height

…It Varies… Water Control Variable: allows you to see the true impact of the independent variable on the dependent Control Variable: any variable or variables that are constant or unchanged in an experiment Water

>It’s what you’re controlling< …It Varies… Independent Variable:  It is a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables  you are trying to measure. >It’s what you’re controlling<

It’s Rocket Science

Educated Guess Hypothesis: If I use fishing line for one rocket and yarn for the other, then the one on the fishing line will go further because there will be less friction.

>It’s what you’re controlling< …It Varies… String Independent Variable:  It is a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables  you are trying to measure. >It’s what you’re controlling< Distance

Important It is either supported or not supported by the data. A Hypothesis is NEVER right   or wrong!!!  It is either supported or not supported by the data.
