Recess update and movement information Recess & Movement Recess update and movement information

Effective July 1, 2018 Pursuant to Chapter 785 (H1419), enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, “Local school boards may include and the Board of Education shall accept, for elementary school, unstructured recreational time that is intended to develop teamwork, social skills, and overall physical fitness in any calculation of total instructional time or teaching hours…”

Unstructured Recreational Time Development of Teamwork, Social Skills, and Overall Physical Fitness Guiding Principles: All Educators believe increased movement is best for kids; implementation strategies for 30 minutes is a site-based decision; principals understand student needs in each building/grade; teachers and/or teams can have flexibility in implementation; each school may have to allow for fluidity throughout the year as student needs change. Schools have piloted the additional recess time. Those schools are finding their school needs drive the 30 minute model. For example one school will allow each grade-level team to decide which model it implements.   15-20 Minutes 2017-18 School Year 30 Minutes 2018-19 School Year

Unstructured Recreational Time Options Option A: 10-minute morning or afternoon break*, and 20 minutes paired with lunch; Option B: 15-minute morning break* set by the teacher/teams, and 15 minutes paired with lunch; or Option C: 30 minutes before or after lunch. *Morning breaks, as part of the instructional time, may be incorporated into CORE extension or another content area recommending a break to increase focus and retention.
