FEEDBACK Chapter 10 Created By Dr. J. Michael Jacobs, Professor Shepherd College Shepherdstown, WV

Feedback ALL Afferent Information sent back to the Central Nervous System after a response was emitted 3 TYPES: KR – Knowledge of Results (Bulls eye! Performance) KP – Knowledge of Performance (Skill Issues) SR – Reward/Punishment, (Reinforcement) an INTERNAL issue Can be Terminal or Concurrent

Performer Verbalization (Self Talk) Before and / or After, Internal or Overt self talk related to the Performance or Results of a Skill Attempt Football – As players break huddle they verbalized what they were about to do. After, they verbalized how they did. No improvement occurs without KR,KP,+ SR KP Demands a mental standard

Processing Feedback Feedback Delay Interval – After attempt time lag to allow the Performer to feel and sense results (about 5 seconds) Post Feedback Delay Interval – After feedback and before next try to allow Performer to Reformulate the Motor Plan (about 5 seconds) Intrinsic – Allowing Performer to Guess their results (Reflection)

Precision of Feedback Beginners – Critique the General Pattern, refer to steps, stress positive first, then negative. More Qualitative. Advanced – Critique the Specific Areas of Incorrect Movement. Be more Quantitative and precise.

Video Feedback Rules 1.Must be at least #2 LEVEL learner 2.Should be done with TEACHER / COACH 3.QUALITY of Video must be High 4.Must Know HOW to Study Video (Checklist) 5.Should be done ASAP

Feedback Schedules ABSOLUTE – After each Attempt INTERMITTANT – Randomly Given SUMMARY – Given at end of day/so many FADED – Started as Absolute but over Time is given less frequently, then not at all (allows for intrinsic to take over) ALL FEEDBACK SHOULD MOVE FROM EXTRINSIC TO INTRINSIC

Rules of Giving Feedback 1)Positive First to Negative 2)Always be Consistent 3)Move from Extrinsic to Intrinsic 4)Start with Overall Pattern, move toward Specific Errors 5)NEVER resort to FOUL LANGUAGE!
