Standards for today SS7H1 The student will analyze continuity and change in Africa leading to the 21st century. a. Explain how the European partitioning across Africa contributed to conflict, civil war, and artificial political boundaries. b. Explain how nationalism led to independence in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. c. Explain the creation and end of apartheid in South Africa and the roles of Nelson Mandela and F.W.de Klerk. d. Explain the impact of the Pan-African movement.

Why was Africa? Africa was colonized for 3 reasons- Racism, Religion, and Resources. (the big R) esources acism eligion

What Resources were there? Africa is very rich in natural resources. Africa has an abundance of people that can be used for physical labor. (slaves) South Africa has the majority of the world’s gold and gemstones.

How would these resources benefit_________? They could get the resources for free/cheap, then manufacture and sell them for a huge profit. European Countries could get rich without using their own resources.

How did _________play a role in colonization? They wanted to make the Africans more like their own culture, since they believed the African cultures to be inferior.

What role did _____ play in Colonization? Many Europeans were Christian, and the Churches wanted to spread their religion to the non-believers. Many Africans followed traditional religions, and were polytheistic. Missionaries were sent to Africa to convert Africans to Christianity.

Writing Prompt Do you think it was right for the Europeans to colonize Africa? Do you think Africans had the right to fight back? In your opinion, has the continent of Africa recovered from European colonization or is it still fighting the violence of the past?
