AQA A Level History Paper 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603 John Dudley Lord President of the Council (1550-53) and Duke of Northumberland (1551-53)

Quick quiz 5 1. To whom was Mary Queen of Scots betrothed in 1548? 2. Why couldn’t Somerset afford to restore the coinage? 3. What was the 1549 Act of Uniformity? 4. What is iconoclasm? 5. Which 1549 rebellion was also known as the Prayer Book Rebellion?

The aim of this and next lesson is to answer these questions: What were the policies of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland? How successful were they? Historians understand the past by asking questions.

To what extent did these symptoms of a Mid-Tudor crisis occur under Somerset? Factionalism Weakness of leadership and succession Religious upheaval Economic problems Foreign policy failures Rebellions

Somerset’s problems, 1547-49 10 Draw the diagram and write one Mid-Tudor Crisis factor in each box, numbering them in descending order of importance. Add notes summarising each problem. Use arrows and notes to show links between problems.

Weakness of leadership and succession Religious upheaval To what extent did these symptoms of a Mid-Tudor crisis occur under Northumberland? Factionalism Weakness of leadership and succession Religious upheaval Economic problems Foreign policy failures Rebellions Were there any achievements to support the revisionist view that Edward’s reign was NOT a time of crisis?

Group work topics Northumberland’s seizure of power (coup) and role of faction (Tillbrook pp.23-4) Leadership style/relationship with king (booklet pp.1-2) Foreign policy (booklet pp.3-4) Religious policy (booklet pp.5-6) Economic policy (booklet p.7) Social policy – compare with Somerset’s (booklet p.8)

Group work 20 In groups, use the information in your handouts to complete your section of the table. Choose a spokesperson to feedback to the class. All learners must fill in their own copy of the table. Extension activity: Using facts from Tillbrook pp.26-27, write down your answer to this question: why did religious policy become more radical under Northumberland?

Here is today’s news… In your groups, write down the headline for the topic you researched. Appoint a newsreader to announce it to the class… … so everyone can write down today’s headlines.
