Paragraph of Importance Charlie Parker (1920-1955), known as “Yardbird” Parker, was one of the most influential, improvising saxophone soloist and composer in jazz. Parker was a central figure in the development of jazz in the 1940’s, and in 1945, he led his own group while performing with others such as Dizzy Gillespie, which together created bebop. This form of jazz is characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic techniques, and advanced harmonies. Parker was an icon for the hipster subculture and The Beat Generation, showing that jazz musicians were intellectual artists. In recent decades, his masterful playing has started to be recognized, due to his life becoming the subject of books, films, and documentaries. His music remains an international source of musical inspiration and one of America’s artistic treasures.
