Chemistry Cornell Notes

Name Date Period Assign # Title and pg.# All papers need a proper heading. Points will be taken off for failing to put a proper heading on your papers.

Notes will be set up using the Cornell Notes format. > Cornell notes are designed to help you stay organized and structured. > They follow a two (2) column format with a left side margin and a right side body.

Your left margin will guide your test preparation. The left margin is for questions you THINK might be on the test or ones you need answered, pictures, examples & Topics. Your left margin will guide your test preparation. Pts.

The way I give my notes should help you keep your information in order. The more organized your notes are, the easier it is to study from them.

New notes should be on their own papers. * NEVER start a new set of notes at the bottom of old notes. (even if space is available)

Food for thought * Use of color, bold print, underlines and all CAPITAL LETTERS emphasizes important information.

Food for thought * MORE time spent on a topic, the MORE questions will be asked about that topic on the test.

Powerpoint Notes

Balanced Chemical Equations The calculations of quantities in chemical reactions is a subject of chemistry called stoichiometry. For chemists, stoichiometry is a form of bookkeeping. It allows chemists to tally the amounts of reactants and products using ratios of moles or representative particles.

What not to do when taking notes.

Don’t make a huge paragraph. Information becomes bunched up. Balanced Chemical Equations The calculations of quantities in chemical reactions is a subject of chemistry called stoichiometry. For chemists, stoichiometry is a form of bookkeeping. It allows chemists to tally the amounts of reactants and products using ratios of moles or representative particles. Don’t make a huge paragraph. Information becomes bunched up. This makes it hard to see connections between ideas.

New slides represent new topics. skip lines between topics. use abbreviations and symbols use sentence fragments if a topic covers more than 1 slide, just continue your bullet points

What You Should Write

The calculation of quantities in chemical reactions. A yellow box indicates information that you do not need to write into your notes. stoichiometry The calculation of quantities in chemical reactions. * form of bookkeeping * to tally the amounts of reactants and products * uses ratios of moles or representative particles example from book 1 mol N2 + 3 mol H2  2 mol NH3

BIGGEST FEARS of students ** writing on the back of a piece of paper ** using more than 1 sheet of paper

The better your notes are, the better you will do in class. Your notes are where most of the test questions come from. * but not all question You can use your notes on Unit Tests (on a declining basis)

I end all my notes the same way. A stop sign will appear and the words THE END.

Summary When notes are finished, you will write a summary of what you learned from the notes. If we run out of time in class before finishing the notes, you will write a summary on what was presented. Some notes will have more than one summary.

Summary Summaries should not just be a rewriting of the notes. I will be looking for some type of comparison of the topics presented to something more familiar. Make a personal connection to the topics.

The End
