The Secret Life of Germs in the Food and Nutrition Lab... At Home and Elsewhere!

Objectives Objectives: Students will be able to identify the causes of injury, food-borne illness and contamination in kitchens.

Word of the Day Food-borne illness: Illness that comes from eating contaminated foods. Food-borne illnesses are caused by pathogens.

To Prevent Cuts… Keep knives sharp. Do not try to catch a falling knife. Wash knives separately. Sweep up broken glass.

To prevent fire and burns… Keep clothing away from heat. Lift lids away from you. Point saucepan handles to the back of the range. Stand to the side when opening oven. Don't reach into the oven. Use hot pads for handling hot pans. Avoid the electrical octopus. Avoid extension cords. Keep plastic away from oven/range.

Prevent Poisoning Store cleaning supplies away from food. Keep cleaning supplies in their original containers. Do not mix chlorine with any product containing ammonia. Swallow Poison Fumes Eye Irritation

Prevent Electric Shock Disconnect when not in use. Don’t use appliances with frayed cords. Stay dry!! Keep metal away from electric appliances.
