Divisibility Rules 2 A number is divisible by 2 if it ends in a zero or an even number. Example: The number 2,784 is divisible by 2 since 4 is an even number. The number 1,813 is NOT divisible by 2 since 3 is an odd number. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3. Example: The number 813 is divisible by 3 since the sum of its digits (8+1+3) equals 12, and 12 is a multiple of 3 (3 x 4 = 12). The number 617 is NOT divisible by 3 since 6+1+7 = 14 and does not divide equally into three groups. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4 A number is divisible by 4 if the last two digits are both zeros or if they are multiples of 4. Example: The numbers 400 and 436 are both divisible by 4 since the last two digits in 400 are zeroes, and the last two digits in 436 are a multiple of 4 (4 x 9 = 36) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 A number is divisible by 5 if it ends in 0 or 5. Example: The number 105 is divisible by 5 since it ends with a 5. The number 640 is divisible by 5 since it ends with a 0. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6 A number is divisible by 6 if it is even and is also divisible by 3. Example: The number 618 is divisible by six since it is both even and the sum of its digits (6+1+8=15) is a multiple of 3 (3 x 5 = 15) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9 A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9. Example: The number 711 is divisible by 9 since 7 + 1 + 1 = 9. (9x1=9) The number 693 is divisible by 9 since 6 + 9 + 3 = 18. 10 A number is divisible by 10 if it ends with zero. Example: 370 ends with 0 – so it is divisible by 10 Keep the divisibility card listing these rules with your other fact cards and multiplication table. Store in a place that is within reach at all times.

EXIT TICKET TODAY WE LEARNED … … use divisibility rules, rectangle method, area model method, and standard method to solve multi-digit division problems. … how to explain/justify the answer to a division problem … to practice fluency for multiplication/division. 1. Grab your student assignment sheet, division fact card, review worksheet and your math journal slip. Complete the “exit ticket” assignment and turn it in to the teacher. Continue working on the rest of the assignment sheet. If it is not finished in class, then it must be completed for homework.

Division Practice Rectangle/Area Method Name ____________________________ Review WORKSHEET Lesson #5 Division Practice Rectangle/Area Method Word Problems Directions: See math journal lesson 4 example. Solve these word problems using the rectangle/area method. Track A The Griffins drove their new car 9,874 miles in 6 months. How many miles did they average per month? Your friend only knows how to solve 246 ÷ 12 the traditional way. (Standard Method ). She does NOT know how to divide using the area model or rectangle method. Write an explanation that will help your friend understand how to divide these two numbers AND why it works. Track B One entire package of sugarless mints has 372 calories. There are 18 mints in the package. How many calories does each mint have? Write an explanation why using an area model for the above problem helps you know the amount of calories in each mint. Track C Tom collected 52,775 donations of canned food for his charity drive. It took him 25 weeks to collect all of them. How many can donations did he average each week? Write a word problem that requires dividing a 4-digit number by 2-digit number. Use the area model method to solve the problem. Write an explanation of why this method helps to find the answer.
