SOMALIA!!

GEOGRAPHY... Located in the NE part of Africa, next to the Middle East Capital—Mogadishu Slightly smaller than Texas Many droughts in summer, floods during rainy season

RELIGION Mostly Islam – this is due to location

GOVERNMENT Prior to 1991 Constitution developed in 1979 Executive power held by a president Only one legal political party = “Somalia Revolutionary Socialist Party”

GOVERNMENT Post 1991 Government overthrown by warlords Mayors became warlords Area known as a “Lawless Land” No permanent national government

ECONOMICS One of the poorest nations in the World GDP: $600 65% of the economy is based on agriculture Due to various natural hazards -droughts/famine, many of the cattle are ill and no one will purchase this from them

SOCIAL STRUCTURE Population…Approx 8.9 million Life expectancy is: 47 male 50 female

EDUCATION Prior to 1991 it was free, literacy rates were up Post 1991-only 8% of school age children are in school Now instead of attending school children learn the way of the streets… chew khat, shoot guns

Limited Jobs Refugees have fled to Kenya and Ethiopia The market is poor, still based on farming and herding

TIME FOR... The True Story of BLACK HAWK DOWN
