Positive Education (Maths Style! )

What is a Growth Mindset? “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment” Carol Dweck

Create an environment that allows students to: Our Goal Create an environment that allows students to: Make mistakes but still choose to move forward Feel safe enough to take risks Build resilience Be able to effectively self-reflect Develop meaning for their learning

Reward progress, strategy and effort Hand up who got stuck at least twice and can tell me what you did about it? Engage in deliberate practice using the “Goldilocks Zone” (not too easy, not too hard) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voa0F2C_hjY (6:26mins)

Myths about mindsets Not the same as Self Esteem and Positive thinking Not the magic bullet for motivation Not a shortcut to success (The invitation to grow, not the growth itself) Not growth or fixed, it’s Mixed Not innate

Success ‘To be successful, students must be motivated and resilient: They must choose to learn and to persist even when schoolwork is challenging.’ Project for Education Research That Scales
