The October 1, 2017, Headcount Report to the General Assembly indicates that 108,664 students, approximately 7% of the total student population, are identified as having limited proficiency in English.

Language Diversity According to the Home Language Survey, there are at least 336 diverse languages spoken in the homes of public school students across North Carolina (March, 2018). About 255,948 students, approximately 17% of the total student population, report a primary language other than English spoken in the home.*

English learners (ELs) Headcount of English Learners (ELs) in North Carolina Public Schools on October 1, 2017 108,664, approximately 7% of the total student population, are identified as having limited proficiency in English. The October 1, 2017, Headcount Report to the General Assembly indicates that 108,664 students, approximately 7% of the total student population, are identified as having limited proficiency in English.

Hindi/Indian/Urdu (0.20%) The top 5 languages (and percent of total student population) spoken in the home other than English (83.29%) are: Spanish (13.3%) Arabic (0.43%) Vietnamese (0.26%) Chinese (0.24%) Hindi/Indian/Urdu (0.20%)

EL Identification English language proficiency screening tools: W-APT and WIDA Screener After completing the Home Language Survey, if a language other than English is determined, the W-APT or WIDA Screener is administered to determine if the student is an English Learner (EL)

EL Identification English language proficiency screening tools: W-APT and WIDA Screener •Can be given 90 days before school begins and as new students enter throughout the school year. •Ensure parents are notified within 30 days of 1st day of school or 14 days after enrollment.

Funding State funds •May be eligible for PRC 054 after first year of operation. Federal funds •May be eligible for PRC 104 after first year of operation. •May be eligible for PRC 111 after third year of operation.
