Agenda - What is mentoring? - What is coaching and why is it so important? Identifying the key skills of a good coach - The process start to finish 1. Entering the setting (building rapport and shared goals) 2. Observing and understanding (questioning, listening) 3. Giving feedback 4. Next steps & monitoring progress

What is mentoring? Mentoring is: Developmental Understanding and trusting Person focused A mutual 2-way relationship Partnership Building capacity and skills Mentoring is not: Task focused Doing it for you or giving the answers Undermining or used to give a negative message

What is coaching? What is it? Draws out the answers Develops rather than imposes Reflects rather than directs Enables rather than trains What are the key skills of a good coach? Relationship building, listening, questioning and feedback Why coach? Unlocks true potential Engagement beats compliance Life skill – not just for work

The mentoring process – step one Building rapport and setting shared goals Why is building rapport so important? Discussing expectations & agreeing mentoring format for future Sharing personal objectives and setting shared goals

Mentoring – Set up checklist How long do we both expect the relationship to last? How often will you visit / contact? And what will those visits look like e.g length of time / how do you both want it to work? When / how do we want to discuss the goals of this process? Who will be the main contact? What happens if one of us needs to cancel? Who is the onus on to get in touch? How do we want to work? (visits / telephone conversations / ) What are the boundaries on our relationship? (areas dont feel comfortable discussing?) How will we measure progress? How / where do we want to discuss feedback after a visit?

Observing – Questioning and Listening Seek first to understand, then be understood Steven R. Covey One of the most powerful lessons of effective communication! The mentoring process – step two
