Tipping Point The Week: 4/6 Thanks for coming in…

Boring but important: Battle over census citizenship question PAGE 6 What do you know about the U.S. Census? What question does President Trump want to add to the 2020 census, and why are 12 states suing to block the question from being added? Why was the question abandoned in 1960? Why is it being called unconstitutional? Why might the question lead to an inaccurate census? What impact could an inaccurate census have?

The real founder of Me Too PAGE 10 What does it mean to be an “unsung hero”? What do you know about the #MeToo movement? What did you learn in the article about the origin of the movement? Why do you think that #MeToo went viral, and why do you think hashtags and social activism can be so powerful? What does Tarana Burke’s story teach us about turning horrible events into action? What other newsmakers have been able to do the same thing?

Protecting your Facebook data PAGE 20 According to the article, what was recently reported about a political firm’s access to people? Why might a political firm want access to people’s data? How, if at all, do you think this news will impact Facebook and its relationship with its members? Do you regularly check your privacy settings on social media apps? What do you think Facebook’s responsibility was to its members if they were aware of this data breach?

March for Our Lives: A Tipping Point Vocabulary Read the article, and explain and define the following terms as it pertains to the article Obituaries: Fizzles: High-capacity: Absolutism: Demonize: Massacre: Ballot box: Unabated: Vitriolic: Demographics: Law-abiding: Tangible:

March for Our Lives: A Tipping Point Signs “Students today. Voters in November.” “We are change.” “You can’t fix stupid, but you can vote it out.” “Ban the piece. Strive for peace.” “Girls clothing in school is more regulated than guns in America.” “Too old to create change? Move aside. We’ll do it.” Explain the meaning behind the messages of the signs

March for Our Lives: A Tipping Point Discussion Questions Why do you think the author describes the March for Our Lives as a “new dawn” in the struggle against gun violence? What is your position on the issue of gun rights vs. gun control? How, if at all, did the marches across the nation influence your opinion? How much influence do you think young people can have on making changes to laws and policies? What issue, if any, do you feel strongly enough about to actively protest?

March for Our Lives: A Tipping Point Take a stand (1) Young people have the power to change their communities. (2) Most teenagers don’t care about social and political issues. (3) Government officials should consult young people on issues that affect them.

March for Our Lives: A Tipping Point Wrap-up (1) Can young people change the world? (2) Why is it important for young people to be informed about political and social issues? (3) Will the March for Our Lives movement create meaningful, sustained changes? Choose a question and investigate.
