Today I am using direct quotations and correct punctuation for effect. Success Starter ~ 17, 19, or 23 Directions: Use your Reading Counts book to identify two sentences with active voice. Turn each active voice sentence into a passive voice sentence. EX. Jessie ate a slice of pie. (active voice) The slice of pie was eaten by Jessie. (passive voice) Materials: Homework: Agenda, pencil, blue or black ink pen Bring Reading Counts book to class DAILY Springboard text Success Starter Check – next Friday, Dec. 8 Notebook

Today’s Agenda! Write a 3 paragraph essay explaining how “Harrison Bergeron” conveys the conflict between the needs or ideals of society and the realities of individuals. Be sure to: Provide examples from the text and use at least one direct quotation to support your ideas. Include a reference to utopia and dystopia. Use active voice unless you choose passive voice for a certain effect. Closing: Be prepared to share your explanation with the rest of your class.

Explanatory Essay Outline Paragraph 1: Introduction Hook Bridge (2 sentences) Thesis statement (One sentence where you tell how the reality of individuals conflicts with the “perfect” society.) Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph Topic sentence (Main reason why you stated your thesis statement.) Direct quote from text which supports your topic sentence. Paraphrase from text OR your own thought which supports your direct quote. Supporting detail which supports your topic sentence. Concluding sentence. Paragraph 3: Conclusion Re-state thesis statement Give commentary (comment your thought) Ending thought you want the reader to remember
