Fractions and Decimals Lesson 15 Fractions and Decimals Dividing Fractions with Models

Warm-Up 21 ÷ 3 16 ÷ 4 How many groups of 8 fit into the number 24?

Dividing Fractions with Models Target: Use models to divide fractions.

Vocabulary Dividend: The number being divided. Divisor: The number used to divide. Quotient: The answer to a division problem.

Example 1 Maelynn needs to measure cup of milk, but only has a cup measuring cup. How many times will she need to fill it? Write the problem . Draw picture that represents the dividend. Circle sets of divisors. Count how many sets of the divisor fit in the dividend. There are 3 circled sets. Maelynn will need to fill the cup 3 times.

Example 2 Clint need to make a platform that is inch thick. He has boards that are each of an inch thick. How many boards does he need to make the platform? Write the problem. Rename with common denominators. Draw a picture of the dividend. Circle sets of divisors. Count the number of circled sets. Clint will need 2 boards.

Exit Problems Draw a model to represent . Find the quotient. Write the equation that matches the model.

Communication Prompt What is the process for finding the answer to using models?
