Using Base 10 Blocks in The Elementary Classroom Mathematics Using Base 10 Blocks in The Elementary Classroom Welcome, Thank you so much for coming and spending a few extra days before you really had to be here. In this session we are going to talk about using manipulatives in the mathematics classroom. We wanted to give you some ideas about how to use them in different ways and find a place for them during you math time. but before we begin there are a couple of house keeping protocols. Cell phones, restrooms, sign in sheets. Certificates.

Objectives Content Objective: Teachers will be able to experience different ways Base 10 Blocks can be used in the classroom by exploring many activities. Language Objective: Teachers will be able to write and speak about the importance of manipulatives in the mathematics classroom. Go over the objectives

Manipulatives Write a reason why manipulatives are important to use in your math class on a sticky note and then share with each other at your table.

An Interesting Fact Since ancient times, people of several different civilizations have used physical objects to help them solve everyday math problems. (Mississippi State University) If ancient civilizations felt that manipulatives were important, why would they be important in present days mathematics programs? Each table will share what they feel is the best remark at their table.)

Why are Manipulatives Important? They are physical student objects that are used as teaching tools to engage the students in the hands-on of learning mathematics.

A good manipulative bridges the gap between informal and formal math.

Manipulatives can help students learn by allowing them to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning.

The effective use of manipulatives can help students connect and integrate their knowledge so they gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Manipulatives can improve mathematics achievement .

Studies suggest that manipulatives can improve the environment in math classrooms.

Long term retention of mathematical concepts can improve with the use of manipulatives. (Mississippi State University)

Base 10 Blocks Today you will leave with some new and fresh ideas on how to use Base 10 Blocks with your students in your math lessons. Read slide.

How have you used Base 10 Blocks in the Classroom? Please write down 2 ways that you have used Base 10 blocks in your classroom. (Teachers brainstorm and record the ways they use Base 10 blocks. Everyone stands and go around and have teachers tell you their ideas. If your ideas have been stated then you can sit down.

Base 10 Blocks and a study of the TEKS Group teachers in grade levels. Pass out TEKS booklet. Grade Levels will look at their TEKS and locate where they could have Base 10 Blocks used in them. Have each grade level write the TEKS on post-it notes to list the TEKS in each objective that Base 10 Blocks could be used and post them on the objective poster. Go over each poster. Each Grade Level will form smaller groups and receive an assigned Lesson from EDM and grade levels will discuss how to use B10 blocks in lessons that do not demonstrate concrete concepts within the lesson. Kinder (lesson 2.11 or 2.12) 1st Grade (lesson 1.2) 2nd Grade (lesson 4.2) 4th Grade (lesson 4.4) 5th Grade (lesson 9.4) 6th Grade (Bits & Pieces I investigation 3.5) A representative from each grade level group will explain how base 10 blocks could be used in the lesson for better understanding. Ideas for Managing Manipulatives Spend a few minutes and write 3 ideas for managing your manipulatives. Give time to compete. Teachers grab their ideas, get up and find a person to share their ideas with. When time is up go back to your table and write down a new idea. Repeat this two other times. After everyone is seated ask for any ideas that you thought would be great to share with the group.

An Interesting Fact The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has recommended the use of manipulatives in teaching mathematical concepts at all grade levels.
