Huck Finn Quiz to Chpt 34:

Style Seen Through Can be Diction Syntax Figurative Language Treatment of the subject Formal Informal Objective Colloquial Archaic

Can you tell? He died. He kicked the bucket. He was conveyed to his Maker. The young man, it appears, has passed on to the netherworld, as it were, that men must all acquire in their finality. Objective Informal & Colloquial Formal Archaic

How do we talk about it? The young man, it appears, has passed on to the netherworld, as it were, that men must all acquire in their finality. Archaic because: Diction: words like netherworld not used often today. Syntax: there are several parentheticals in this sentence, and the construction “men must all acquire in their finality” shows an older voice. Treatment of the subject and Figurative Language: Ironically, death is usually not something “acquired” (like money, for example), though we still “pass on”

What is Twain’s Style? Diction? Syntax? Figurative Language? Treatment of the subject?

Let’s Look at Language Groups of four, find the character’s speech and paraphrase it. Make a list of words you don’t know or can’t figure out—do they suggest a particular style? Describe the character’s Voice—(age, gender, education level, class)

Jigsaw Each group member read a line or two from your character’s speech. Determine how the dialect is different Answer: Why did Twain work so hard to make sure his character’s all had a different dialect?
